MY WRITING

I am passionate about helping people improve their mental health, especially those struggling with the impact of trauma. I have spent many years training in and practising the most effective forms of psychotherapy, as well as soaking up as much knowledge as I can about the latest research and developments in psychology and related subjects such as mindfulness, self-compassion and neurobiology. I find these subjects fascinating – and also want to share my passion about the human mind, brain and body with as many people as possible.

I am a psychotherapist based in East Sussex, UK, who specialises in complex trauma. As an Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist, Trainer & Supervisor and Internal Family Systems Therapist I combine schema therapy, as well as internal family systems, compassion-focused therapy and somatic therapies into my unique model: integrated trauma therapy. I am a long-term meditator and student of Buddhism, so I also weave in ideas from Buddhist psychology, because this 2,500-year-old tradition offers such rich, wise insights into what causes suffering and how to relieve it. I specialise in helping people with the impact of childhood trauma, but work with a wide range of psychological problems. My practice is online, so I work with clients and supervisees all over the world via Zoom.

I am also a meditation teacher for Insight Timer, where you will find a wealth of resources (mostly free/donation-based) including courses, breathing techniques, guided imagery, mindfulness and self-compassion practices and much more. If you are struggling with your mental health – and especially if you have experienced trauma – practices like these are a crucial part of your healing journey, whether you are also having therapy or not.

But as a former health journalist, my other great passion is writing – and this allows me to reach and hopefully help a much wider audience. I both write my own blog posts, articles and books and provide expert opinion to journalists working in print and broadcast media.

I am especially keen to promote a greater understanding of trauma, which is reaching epidemic proportions across the globe and is at the root of most psychological disorders and human suffering. That is why I founded my Heal Your Trauma project, which ran from 2021-23, helping people struggling with the impact of trauma. The project involved guided meditations, webinars and workshops, as well as my blog, which you can read on this site – sign up using the form below to get my latest posts delivered straight to your inbox. It provides a huge amount of free information about all aspects of psychology, psychotherapy, mental health and wellbeing.

If you would like to read more of my work, here is a selection of my writing. I hope you enjoy it.

My books

My first self-help book, Heal Your Trauma: How to Overcome a Painful Childhood to Become Happy and Whole Again, will be published in June 2026 and is now available to pre-order. It brings together everything I have learned from 30 years of studying psychology and numerous therapy models, as well as 15 years of practising as a psychotherapist and specialising in helping people heal the legacy of a traumatic childhood. I am very proud of my first book and think it offers a step-by-step path to healing, whatever you may have been through in childhood. It’s also packed with helpful ideas, theories and exercises you can use as you walk the path toward healing. Those who buy the book will also get access to a free collection of breathwork, guided imagery, self-compassion, schema therapy and IFS meditations. I do hope you enjoy it and find it an inspiring, insightful and hope-giving resource as you seek to change, grow and heal.

FOR MENTAL-HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

I am a contributor to Creative Methods in Schema Therapy: Advances and Innovation in Clinical Practice, edited by Dr Gillian Heath and Dr Helen Startup. I co-authored the chapter, Endings and the Therapy Relationship, with Dr Tünde Vanko. This book presents the cutting-edge of theory and practice in schema therapy, with contributions from leading experts from our global community – I strongly recommend it whether you are new to ST or a seasoned practitioner. Order your copy here.

I was pleased to write an article about schema therapy for Therapy Today, flagship magazine of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). And I was invited to write a series of five posts, published from December 2019 to January 2020, for the PESI Blog about the schema therapy model for treating complex trauma.
